Roll-off dumpster rental in Roxbury

Approx. 14 road miles northeast of the yard, around 28 minutes.

Roxbury is approx. 14 road miles northeast of the yard, around 28 minutes. Same-day or next-day when availability allows; call before noon for the best chance of same-day. Roxbury is a town of 2,260 at the 2020 Census, in Litchfield County.

Roxbury's code says “Any person who intends to operate as a collector within the Town shall register in advance with the Board of Selectman in the manner prescribed by this chapter” (§ 11-6(A)), applying to the First Selectman's office before 1 July each year (§ 11-7(A)), and it counts demolition and construction debris as solid waste (§ 11-2). Since 2021, while Roxbury is an HRRA member, registration of collectors and haulers “using HRRA sites for solid waste or recyclable solid waste” follows HRRA's requirements, which “shall supersede and replace those of the Town of Roxbury” (§ 11-8). HRRA's form lists Roxbury and says HRRA registration is deemed registration in the Town.

Local knowledge

Getting our bearings in Roxbury

Knowing a town properly is the difference between covering it and showing up with the right box.

  • Register in advance — collectors register with the Board of Selectmen, applying to the First Selectman's office before 1 July (§§ 11-6(A), 11-7(A)).
  • HRRA's rules for HRRA sites — for collectors using HRRA sites, HRRA's requirements replace the Town's (§ 11-8).
  • Residents only — “All materials deposited at the Roxbury Transfer Station must originate from residential properties of Roxbury residents.”
  • No collector demolition — collectors may not bring demolition debris or a vehicle over two cubic yards, or come on Saturdays (§ 11-10(A)).
  • Covers on every vehicle — “All vehicles shall have canvas or other suitable covers” (§ 11-9(A)).
  • State routes — Routes 67, 199, 317 and 45 in Roxbury are CT DOT's.

What comes out of Roxbury properties

Roxbury's Transfer Station, 35 Lower County Rd, takes household trash from residents with a permit, but HRRA lists demolition as not accepted there, and the code bars collectors from bringing demolition debris or using a vehicle over two cubic yards (§ 11-10(A)). A remodel, a roof or an estate clean-out is container work. Small clean-outs and yard debris fit a 10 (about 3 pickup loads); medium remodels and flooring a 15 (4 to 5 loads); roofing jobs and renovations a 20 (about 6); large clean-outs or construction a 30 (about 9); and demolition and commercial jobs a 40 (about 12). As a rough guide, a kitchen remodel is a 10 or a 15, a roof of around 2,000 square feet a 15, a whole-house clean-out a 20, and new construction or demolition a 30 or a 40. Concrete, brick and asphalt go in limited quantities, and heavy materials such as concrete, dirt and roofing shingles are best kept separate to stay inside the weight limit. HRRA describes construction and demolition waste as “Demolition materials and packaging resulting from construction, remodeling, repair and demolition operations”, leaving out asbestos, clean fill, radioactive material, hazardous waste and large quantities of liquids. The standard rental period is up to 7 days. Need longer? Call or text to extend it for a small daily fee. Finished early? Call and we'll move the pickup up if we can — there's no penalty for an early pickup.

What goes in: household junk and furniture; construction debris such as wood, drywall, flooring and siding; yard waste including branches, grass and soil; roofing shingles; metal, plastic, cardboard and packaging; and concrete, brick or asphalt in limited quantities. What doesn't: paints, solvents and automotive fluids, batteries and electronics, propane tanks and fuel containers, tires, medical waste, and asbestos or hazardous chemicals — that's our own list. Connecticut law backs up two of them: no one may knowingly put a covered electronic device, such as a computer, monitor or TV, in a solid waste facility (CGS § 22a-636), and a used battery may not go in mixed municipal solid waste (§ 22a-256g(a); DEEP reads it as the lead-acid storage battery). If you're unsure about something, call before it goes in. Our what can and can't go in a dumpster in Connecticut guide covers the rest. Mattresses, paint and electronics have their own HRRA programs — see hrra.org or call HRRA on 203-775-4539.

Permits, placement and who may haul in Roxbury

Who may haul: “Any person who intends to operate as a collector within the Town shall register in advance with the Board of Selectman in the manner prescribed by this chapter” (§ 11-6(A)). Applications go to the First Selectman's office before 1 July each year, listing among other things the vehicles, the customers served and evidence of insurance (§ 11-7(A)), and run to the following 30 June (§ 11-7(C)). “Persons without approved registrations as collectors and all collectors whose registrations have been suspended or revoked are prohibited from engaging in collecting, hauling, transporting or disposing of solid waste generated within the Town” (§ 11-12). While Roxbury is an HRRA member, registration of collectors “using HRRA sites” follows HRRA's requirements, which “shall supersede and replace those of the Town of Roxbury” (§ 11-8). Connecticut has every collector register each year in each town it hauls solid waste from (CGS § 22a-220a(d)(1)) — a collector being “any person who holds himself out for hire regularly to collect solid waste” (§ 22a-220a(g)) — and “The door of any private vehicle used to haul solid waste shall be clearly marked with the business name and address of the hauler” (§ 22a-220a(e)). This town is one of the 14 members of HRRA, the Housatonic Resources Recovery Authority, a public regional authority (CGS § 7-273aa). HRRA's registration form says “Registration with the HRRA is deemed registration in the municipality”, and its hauler policy says “All Haulers must clearly display the name of the company on each vehicle and/or roll-off container operating in the municipality.” We're licensed & insured.

At the Transfer Station: “The transfer station is for residential use only”; “The size of the vehicle used to enter the transfer station shall not exceed two cubic yards or 48,000 pounds of the gross weight of the vehicle”; “No commercial or business solid waste is allowed at the transfer station”; “A collector is prohibited from transporting or dumping demolition debris at the transfer station”; and “Collectors and haulers may not use the transfer station on Saturdays” (§ 11-10(A)). The code also says “All vehicles shall have canvas or other suitable covers” (§ 11-9(A)).

In the street: “No person shall park any motor vehicle or permit it to remain stationary within the limits of any public highway in such a manner as to constitute a traffic hazard or to obstruct the free movement of traffic thereon” (§ 12-38), and road permits cover excavation on or under a Town highway or right-of-way (§ 12-11). We found no town rule for a container on a town road; we check with Public Works before a street placement. Roxbury Public Works is at 31 North St, (860) 354-8343. Driveway first. You don't need to be home as long as the container is accessible and the area is clear. Our smaller containers are driveway-friendly — about 8 feet wide and about 12 feet long for a 10-yard, up to about 22 feet long for a 20-yard and larger — and our drivers use protective boards or padding when necessary to help prevent driveway damage. Once it's placed, please don't move it; call us and we'll reposition it.

State highways: Routes 67, 199, 317 and 45 in Roxbury are state roads. Connecticut law says no one may “place any obstruction or substruction within, under, upon or over” a state highway without the written permission of the Commissioner of Transportation (CGS § 13a-247(a)), with fines of $2,000 to $5,000 for each offense and each day a separate one (§ 13a-247(d)). So a container never goes in the right-of-way of I-84, US-7, US-202, CT-133 or any other state route — beside one, it goes on private property.

Covered loads: Connecticut bars driving a vehicle that isn't built or loaded to keep its load “from dropping, sifting, leaking or otherwise escaping” (CGS § 14-271(a)), and a refuse truck of 5,000 lb or more carrying an open-top container secures the contents with “a screen or other material having perforations of a size not greater than two square inches” (§ 14-271(c)). Keep debris level with or below the top rim — overfilled containers can't be transported safely.

Remodel or tear-down: Connecticut's Department of Public Health says “All facilities from sheds to commercial establishments are covered under” the state's asbestos regulations, and that under the federal rules notice applies above set thresholds for renovations “and for all demolitions, even when there is no asbestos present.” Check the current notice requirements with the DPH Asbestos Program, (860) 509-7367, before work starts. Asbestos never goes in our containers — tell us if an inspection finds any.

How it works

Booking a dumpster in Roxbury

Booking a container here takes one phone call and about five minutes.

  1. Step 1: Call and tell us the job

One short conversation. We ask the address and the town - the rules follow the town the property is in - what you are clearing, whether a cleanout, a renovation, a roof, a yard or a job site, what is going in, roughly how much there is, and how much room the driveway or lot gives us.

  2. Step 2: We size it and quote it flat

We recommend the right size, without upselling, so you do not pay for space you will not use or call for another pickup, and you get one clear flat-rate price that covers delivery, pickup, disposal within the weight limit and the standard rental period of up to 7 days. If it is concrete, shingles or dirt, we say up front that weight decides the size. If your town needs a permit or its own registration, we check its rules before booking.

  3. Step 3: Delivered where you want it

The driver sets the container on the driveway, lot or job site where you asked, on flat, solid ground rather than the lawn, with protective boards on request. Often same-day or next-day, when availability allows. You do not need to be home if the spot is marked and clear.

  4. Step 4: Load it at your pace

Keep debris level with or below the top rim and keep the problem items out - paints, solvents and automotive fluids, fuel, hazardous chemicals, batteries, electronics, propane tanks, tires, medical waste and asbestos. Need more time or a swap mid-job? One call or text.

  5. Step 5: We pick it up and handle the disposal

Call or text when it is full or the job is done and we schedule the pickup, often within 24 hours. The load goes to licensed disposal and recycling facilities serving Fairfield County, and whenever possible concrete, metal and wood are separated for recycling.

Collectors register in advance with the Board of Selectmen, applying to the First Selectman's office before 1 July (§§ 11-6(A), 11-7(A)). For collectors using HRRA sites, HRRA's requirements replace the Town's (§ 11-8).
