Local cleanups

From Danbury and Brookfield to Bethel, Newtown, Ridgefield and the towns across the Housatonic Valley, we look for ways to support the people and organizations that make the area what it is - community and neighborhood cleanups, charitable and nonprofit projects, local schools, churches and teams, and storm cleanup when severe weather hits. When a local group organizes a cleanup, the hard part is always the pile at the end, and a roll-off is often exactly what it needs. Tell us what you are clearing and we help you pick the size.

One honest tip: sort before you load. HRRA's site lists where household paint, chemicals and mattresses go. Electronics stay out of the container: Connecticut bars knowingly placing covered electronic devices in a solid waste facility (CGS § 22a-636). Green waste is worth keeping in its own load. Keep tires, batteries, propane tanks and anything hazardous out of a cleanup container altogether.

Partner with us

Are you with a school, church, sports team, nonprofit or neighborhood association in the greater Danbury area that could use a hand with a cleanup or project? Call (475) 256-5131 or email info@hatcitydumpsters.com and let us find a way to help. A cleanup container follows the same rules as any other. On a Danbury street, § 28-55 bars placing "any article, material or thing of any kind" on a street, sidewalk or public place so as to obstruct public travel without a permit from the City Engineer, and § 42-111(2) needs a Public Works permit for the temporary storage of equipment or construction materials in a City right-of-way. Neither section names dumpsters, and we found no dumpster-specific permit or fee. So the driveway comes first, and for a street placement we check the City's rules and the placement with you before booking. Elsewhere we check with Public Works before a street placement, and in Bethel a construction container at a one- or two-family home needs a Building Official permit (Code Ch. 52). We tell you what applies before the day.

We also work alongside the contractors, landscapers and small businesses that keep the area growing, and help keep neighborhoods clean during renovations, cleanups and seasonal projects.

Responsible disposal

Keeping the area clean also means sending what we haul to the right place. All waste goes to licensed disposal and recycling facilities serving Fairfield County, and whenever possible we separate concrete and asphalt, wood and scrap metal, and yard debris for recycling, keeping them out of landfill. Hazardous materials go to a household hazardous waste collection, never the container, and every load leaves built or loaded so none of it drops, sifts, leaks or escapes, as Connecticut law requires (CGS § 14-271(a)).
