The 40 yard container in Danbury

The 40 yard is our largest roll-off container, built for the highest waste volumes with fewer hauls and fewer interruptions. Commercial and industrial construction, full-building renovations or demolitions, large office or retail cleanouts, major home remodels and estate cleanouts, roofing replacements for large structures, apartment and multi-unit renovations, and disaster recovery and storm cleanup - that is where it lives. It holds about 40 cubic yards, roughly twelve pickup truck loads.

Bulky and mixed debris is what justifies the 40: drywall, framing, flooring, roofing, fixtures, large appliances, pallets, packaging and cardboard on larger projects. The footprint is the same 22 by 8 feet as a 20 or 30, but at eight feet tall it is usually loaded by a crew - general contractors on multi-phase projects, developers on new builds or demolitions, property managers renovating multi-unit buildings, large businesses handling facility upgrades.

Space needed

a flat, solid spot about 22 feet long and 8 feet wide on a lot or job site (pavement or a pad, not grass), with clear access for the truck at delivery and pickup and nothing blocking a sidewalk, mailbox or storm drain

Construction, demolition and big commercial jobs

Big jobs come with local rules about containers on site. In Danbury, City Code § 36-24(c) says: "Property owners and general contractors in charge of a construction site are jointly and severally required to furnish approved containers for construction litter. All litter from construction and related activities shall be containerized and shall be picked up and placed in the approved containers at the end of each workday." In Bethel, the Code Ch. 52 permit covers a construction container at a one- or two-family home, so we check the Town's rules before booking there.

Demolition comes with state paperwork. Connecticut's Department of Public Health says "All facilities from sheds to commercial establishments are covered" by the state asbestos regulations, and its page notes that federal notice rules apply to renovations above set amounts and to "all demolitions, even when there is no asbestos present". Check the current timing with DPH before work starts. Asbestos never goes in our roll-offs. On the road, Connecticut requires every load to be built or loaded so none of it drops, sifts, leaks or escapes (CGS § 14-271(a)), and an open-top refuse container on a refuse truck of 5,000 lb or more has to be secured with a screen or other material with openings no bigger than two square inches (§ 14-271(c)).

Access and placement for a 40 yard

The truck needs clear access at delivery and pickup and flat, solid ground such as a paved lot or a pad. On a job site we place it where the crews can work around it, on protective boards on request, and our drivers position it carefully even on tight or active sites. A 40 in a public way is a different question. Connecticut law bars placing any obstruction within, under, upon or over a state highway "without the written permission of the commissioner" of Transportation (CGS § 13a-247), with fines of $2,000 to $5,000 for each offense and each day counted separately, so a container never goes in the right-of-way of I-84, US-7, US-202, CT-133 or any other state route. On a Danbury street, § 28-55 bars placing "any article, material or thing of any kind" on a street, sidewalk or public place so as to obstruct public travel without a permit from the City Engineer, and § 42-111(2) needs a Public Works permit for the temporary storage of equipment or construction materials in a City right-of-way. Neither section names dumpsters, and we found no dumpster-specific permit or fee. So the driveway comes first, and for a street placement we check the City's rules and the placement with you before booking. Outside Danbury we found no town rule for a container on a town road, so we check with Public Works before a street placement. Ridgefield bars placing building material or anything else on a sidewalk so it blocks free passage (§ 310-2), and Bethel bars placing debris on any public roadway or right-of-way (§ 83-3). Each town page says what that town asks for.

Suitability

Is the 40 yard the right size for you?

Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.

Choose the 40 yard for

  • Commercial and industrial construction
  • Full-building renovations and demolition
  • Large office and retail cleanouts
  • Multi-unit and apartment renovations
  • Storm cleanup and disaster recovery

Pick a different size for

  • Heavy-only loads - concrete, dirt and brick go in a 10 or a split load
  • Small jobs (you would pay for unused space)
  • Sites without truck access
  • Asbestos, oil, paint, fuel or medical waste

40 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked

Not covered here? Call (475) 256-5131 and ask.

Will a 40 yard dumpster fit on a residential property?

Its footprint is the same as a 20 or 30 - about 22 by 8 feet - so it can go on some residential properties, but at eight feet tall it is a lot of box for a house. For most homes a 30, or a 20 with swaps, is the better fit. Ask and we will say which.

How do you load a 40 yard?

Usually with a crew. The walls are about eight feet high, so hand loading from the ground is slow. Load evenly across the container and keep debris level with or below the top rim.

Can I put concrete in a 40 yard?

Within the weight limit, and not as the main load. Typically 5 to 6 tons is included, and concrete, soil or brick reach that at a fraction of the volume. For heavy material, book a 10 yard or ask for a split-load plan.

Do you offer swaps on long jobs?

Yes. We rotate containers on a set schedule or on demand so the crew never stalls, and long-term and multi-bin projects qualify for discounted pricing and monthly invoicing. Tell us the scope and expected duration and we quote the whole job.
