The 20 yard container in Danbury

When somebody calls and is not sure, the 20 yard is often the answer - it is one of our most requested sizes, with the right balance of capacity, flexibility and cost. Full kitchen or bathroom remodels, multi-room renovations, multi-room and estate cleanups, roofing tear-offs, flooring, drywall or siding replacement, deck or fence removal, light demolition and office or retail remodels all fit it. It holds about 20 cubic yards, roughly six pickup truck loads.

It is about 22 feet long and 8 feet wide, which is the thing to check: that is most of a two-car driveway. It still fits most residential driveways and job sites around Danbury and Brookfield, and it loads easily from the sides or through the rear door. For a project that makes debris over several days it is often the most efficient choice.

Space needed

a flat, solid spot about 22 feet long and 8 feet wide (a driveway, pad or job site, not the lawn), with clear access for the truck at delivery and pickup and nothing blocking a sidewalk, mailbox or storm drain

Renovations, roofs and estate cleanouts

Furniture, boxes and mixed junk from a multi-room or estate cleanout; drywall, lumber, cabinets and flooring from a remodel; shingles off a roof; siding, decking and fence boards; framing, doors and windows from light demolition - these are 20 yard jobs. Shingles and tile are heavy, so tell us about the roof or the floor and we check the weight with you first.

The public options stop well short of that. The town transfer stations are resident drop-offs, not a home for a big job's debris. Bethel's takes no construction debris; Newtown's bars commercial vehicles and does not take concrete, mortar, brick or block; Redding's is for Redding residents only, with no commercial dumping; Roxbury bars collectors from bringing demolition debris (§ 11-10(A)(6)); Southbury's permits are for residents only; and Woodbury turns away businesses from outside town. Ridgefield's own page says residential projects over four cubic yards "should be managed with an onsite dumpster rental at the job site". We take the load to licensed disposal and recycling facilities serving Fairfield County, and whenever possible concrete, metal and wood are separated for recycling.

What the 20 yard includes

Flat-rate pricing that covers delivery and pickup, disposal within the stated weight limit - typically 3 to 4 tons, depending on the debris - and a standard rental period of up to 7 days. Need it longer? We extend it for a small daily fee. Tile, plaster, shingles and wet yard waste add up, so plan by weight as well as volume, load evenly and keep everything level with or below the top rim. For a lot of concrete, soil or brick, use a 10 yard or split the load. Protective boards go under the container on request.

Suitability

Is the 20 yard the right size for you?

Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.

Choose the 20 yard for

  • Multi-room renovations and cleanouts
  • Full kitchen and bathroom remodels
  • Roofing tear-offs, with the weight checked first
  • Flooring, drywall and siding replacement
  • Deck, fence and light demolition debris

Pick a different size for

  • Mostly concrete, dirt, brick or tile (a 10 handles the weight better)
  • New construction and major demolition - that is a 30 or 40
  • Driveways without about 22 feet of clear length
  • Asbestos, paint, oil, chemicals, tires or batteries

Placing a 20 yard container in Danbury

It needs a flat, solid spot about 22 feet long and 8 feet wide (a driveway, pad or job site, not the lawn), with clear access for the truck at delivery and pickup and nothing blocking a sidewalk, mailbox or storm drain. The driveway comes first. On a Danbury street, § 28-55 bars placing "any article, material or thing of any kind" on a street, sidewalk or public place so as to obstruct public travel without a permit from the City Engineer, and § 42-111(2) needs a Public Works permit for the temporary storage of equipment or construction materials in a City right-of-way. Neither section names dumpsters, and we found no dumpster-specific permit or fee. So the driveway comes first, and for a street placement we check the City's rules and the placement with you before booking. In Bethel, a construction container at a one- or two-family home needs a written Building Official permit (Code Ch. 52), so we check the Town's rules before booking. Outside Danbury we found no town rule for a container on a town road, so we check with Public Works before a street placement. Ridgefield bars placing building material or anything else on a sidewalk so it blocks free passage (§ 310-2), and Bethel bars placing debris on any public roadway or right-of-way (§ 83-3). Connecticut law bars placing any obstruction within, under, upon or over a state highway "without the written permission of the commissioner" of Transportation (CGS § 13a-247), with fines of $2,000 to $5,000 for each offense and each day counted separately, so a container never goes in the right-of-way of I-84, US-7, US-202, CT-133 or any other state route. Check any HOA rules too. Protective boards can go under the container on request. Each town page covers its own rules.

20 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked

Not covered here? Call (475) 256-5131 and ask.

How many pickup loads is a 20 yard dumpster?

About six. Think of it as a multi-room cleanout of furniture and junk, or the debris from a full kitchen and bathroom remodel.

Can a 20 yard fit in a Danbury driveway?

In most - it is about 22 feet long and 8 feet wide and fits most residential driveways. Put it on the driveway or a pad rather than the lawn, keep clear access for the truck and do not block a sidewalk, mailbox or storm drain.

What is the typical weight limit on a 20 yard?

Typically 3 to 4 tons, depending on debris type. Shingles, tile, concrete, dirt and wet yard waste are the loads that test it; household junk and remodel debris usually do not. Call for an estimate based on your debris.

How long is the rental?

A standard rental period of up to 7 days. If the job runs on, we extend it for a small daily fee; if it fills early, ask for a swap; if you finish early, call or text and we move the pickup up, with no penalty.

Can I get a 20 yard the same day?

Often, depending on the time of your call and the location. Same-day or next-day delivery is available when availability allows - call (475) 256-5131 before noon for the best chance. The phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; we deliver and pick up Monday through Saturday and do not promise night or Sunday drop-offs.
