Why a cleanout needs its own dumpster

Hauling a cleanout a few bags at a time, or making trip after trip to a disposal site, eats your weekends. Around Danbury, household trash is a private subscription service, and the public options are small. The town stations are for residents with permits, and HRRA's pages for Bethel, New Milford and Kent say bulky items are not to exceed four feet in any dimension. Monroe's Dial-A-Dump allows "one pickup only per calendar year". Kent's station is open weekends only, and Bridgewater's town facility takes no household trash at all. A roll-off in the driveway changes the rhythm: you work continuously, toss as you go, and we haul it away in one pickup.

Match the size to the house

For a garage or attic cleanout, a 10 or 15 yard is usually enough; clearing a garage plus a basement or attic at the same time calls for a 20 yard. A whole-house cleanout is usually a 20, and estate and foreclosure cleanouts are on the 20's list too. A 30 yard handles full-house cleanouts with a lot of furniture, mattresses and mixed junk, and a 40 covers large estate or property cleanouts. Furniture is bulky and light, so volume usually decides a cleanout before weight does. The sizing guide has the full table.

Plan, sort and work room by room

Walk the house first and list the spaces you are tackling. Then run every item through four piles, keep, donate, drop-off and toss, before anything goes in the bin. The drop-off pile is the short one: car batteries, TVs and computers, tires, paint and solvents, propane tanks, and fridges, freezers or AC units cannot go in the box. Having the container on site makes the toss decision fast, because there is no pile of maybe items building up in the yard. Finish one space before moving to the next, starting with the one that bothers you most, often the garage.

  • Garage and storage: old tools, broken equipment, leftover building materials; tires, car batteries, fuel and motor oil go to the drop-off pile.
  • Kitchen: cabinets, cookware and appliances without refrigerant; fridges and freezers go elsewhere (below).
  • Bedrooms and closets: furniture, mattresses, clothing and boxes can all go in, or to donation.
  • Attic and basement: stored boxes, old decor, keepsakes to sort; paint cans and chemicals to the drop-off pile.
  • Yard: branches, shrubs, old fencing, patio furniture; brush and leaves best as their own load.

Time it to the job

The standard rental period is up to 7 days, which covers most single-house cleanouts, and your quote confirms the days. Need longer? Call or text us to extend for a small daily fee, or arrange a swap of a full box for an empty one. Finish early and there is no penalty for an early pickup. You do not need to be present for pickup as long as the dumpster is accessible and the area is clear, which helps when you are clearing a family member's home from out of town.

Plan the yard work too. Danbury runs a bi-annual Leaf Pick Up Program in spring and fall and has a public yard waste centre on Plumtrees Road, and Brookfield residents have the Yard Refuse Disposal Center on Pocono Rd on Saturdays. A cleanout with a lot of brush is easier with a separate yard waste dumpster, since yard waste is best kept separate from household trash.

What cleanout junk can go in

Most household cleanout material is fine for a roll-off: furniture of every kind, mattresses, clothing, boxes and general junk, old flooring and carpet, cabinets and fixtures, and cardboard kept flat and together. Load smart: break down bulky items, spread the weight evenly rather than piling it at one end, fill the gaps with smaller pieces, and keep everything level with or below the top rim, because overfilled dumpsters cannot be transported safely. If the cleanout turns into a remodel, with cabinets coming off the walls or flooring coming up, tell us, and do not mix dirt or concrete in with household junk without checking first.

Set these aside, and where they go

A few things turn up in every cleanout that cannot go in the box. Car batteries may not go in mixed municipal solid waste in Connecticut (CGS § 22a-256g(a)); take them back to a battery retailer, a recycling facility or a town collection site. TVs, computers and monitors may not knowingly be placed in a solid waste facility (§ 22a-636); use the options on HRRA's e-waste page, or our junk removal service, which sends electronics through approved programs. Paint, solvents, cleaners and pesticides are household hazardous waste; ask your town or HRRA where they go. Propane tanks and tires stay out. Fridges, freezers and AC units go through our junk removal service, which removes refrigerators and other appliances. Usable furniture and household items can be donated, and our junk removal team recycles and donates whenever possible. The what-goes-in guide has the full list.

Driveways, HOAs and the street

The driveway is the spot. A flat, solid surface works best, plywood under the wheels helps protect it, and protective boards are available on request. If your home is in an HOA, its rules can limit how long a dumpster stays or where it sits, so check before delivery day and tell us about any tight access, shared lot or steep drive; we are familiar with placing dumpsters in tight driveways, shared lots and restricted-access areas.

Local rules matter too. In Danbury, a street spot is a permit question under City Code § 28-55 and § 42-111(2), so we check the City's rules and the placement with you before booking. In Bethel, a roll-off at a one- or two-family home needs a written Building Official permit for up to 30 days, plus one 30-day renewal, and the container may not hold recyclables or garbage (Ch. 52), so we check the Town's rules before booking. In Monroe and Southbury we check the Town's rules before booking too. Elsewhere, we found no town rule for a container on a town road; we check with Public Works before a street placement. The permit guide has every town we list.

Delivery day, or let us do the lifting

Our dumpsters are clean and driveway-safe. Give us a flat, solid spot with clear access for the truck, move cars out of the way, and keep the spot clear of sidewalks, mailboxes and storm drains. Near homes we plan drop-offs and pickups for the daytime and do not promise night or Sunday service. If you would rather not lift a thing, ask about our junk removal service, where our crew does the loading, hauling and cleanup and recycles and donates whenever possible. Call (475) 256-5131 — the phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week — and ask about same-day delivery if the cleanout is already under way: we offer same-day or next-day delivery throughout Danbury and nearby areas when availability allows.

Frequently asked questions

Not covered here? Call (475) 256-5131 and ask.

What size dumpster do I need for a house cleanout?

A whole-house cleanout is usually a 20 yard, or a 30 for a full-house cleanout with a lot of furniture and mixed junk. A garage or attic usually needs a 10 or 15. Tell us what the home looks like and we will recommend the right size.

Can I throw away furniture and mattresses?

Yes. Furniture, mattresses, clothing and household junk can all go in a roll-off. Keep car batteries, electronics, tires, paint and chemicals, propane tanks and anything holding refrigerant out.

What about an old fridge or freezer?

Set it aside. Refrigerants are on our no list, so fridges, freezers and AC units stay out of the box. Our junk removal service removes refrigerators and other appliances.

How long can I keep a cleanout dumpster?

The standard rental period is up to 7 days, and your quote confirms the days. If you need more time, call or text to extend for a small daily fee; finish early and there is no penalty for an early pickup.
