Residential Dumpster Rental across Greater Danbury

Homes around here vary enough that one container does not fit all of them. A tight driveway in an older Danbury neighborhood wants a 10 or a 15 set down carefully; a bigger lot in Brookfield, Newtown or Ridgefield may have room for a 20 or a 30. The 10 and 15 yard sizes fit comfortably in most driveways, and the first thing we ask on the phone is what your driveway looks like.

Most residential jobs are one of three things: a cleanout (a garage, an attic, an estate, or a house before a move or downsizing), a remodel (kitchen, bath, flooring, roof), or the yard - landscaping or storm cleanup. Each wants a different size and a different talk about weight. The size comparison covers the numbers, the home cleanout guide covers the planning, and the phone call covers your job.

What actually fills a residential container

Cleanouts lead the way: furniture, clothing, old toys, boxes and household junk from a garage, an attic or a whole house before a move or downsizing, or an estate. Remodels are next - drywall, flooring, cabinets and fixtures from a kitchen, a bath or a whole-house renovation. Then the outdoor jobs: shingles off a roof, branches, soil and green waste from a garden makeover or a storm.

The alternative is the town drop-off, and it only goes so far. The town transfer stations are resident drop-offs, not a home for a big job's debris. Bethel's takes no construction debris; Newtown's bars commercial vehicles and does not take concrete, mortar, brick or block; Redding's is for Redding residents only, with no commercial dumping; Roxbury bars collectors from bringing demolition debris (§ 11-10(A)(6)); Southbury's permits are for residents only; and Woodbury turns away businesses from outside town. Ridgefield's own page says residential projects over four cubic yards "should be managed with an onsite dumpster rental at the job site". Instead of repeated trips, a roll-off takes the whole job in one go.

Driveway placement, street rules and the town you live in

The driveway comes first. A driveway, pad or other flat, solid surface works best, and protective boards can go under the container on request. Keep clear access for the truck at delivery and pickup, and do not block a sidewalk, mailbox or storm drain. If your neighborhood has HOA rules or limited access, let us know. In Bethel, a construction container at a one- or two-family home needs a written permit from the Building Official, for up to 30 days with one 30-day renewal (Code Ch. 52), so we check the Town's rules before booking.

The street is another matter. On a Danbury street, § 28-55 bars placing "any article, material or thing of any kind" on a street, sidewalk or public place so as to obstruct public travel without a permit from the City Engineer, and § 42-111(2) needs a Public Works permit for the temporary storage of equipment or construction materials in a City right-of-way. Neither section names dumpsters, and we found no dumpster-specific permit or fee. So the driveway comes first, and for a street placement we check the City's rules and the placement with you before booking. Outside Danbury we found no town rule for a container on a town road, so we check with Public Works before a street placement. Ridgefield bars placing building material or anything else on a sidewalk so it blocks free passage (§ 310-2), and Bethel bars placing debris on any public roadway or right-of-way (§ 83-3). Connecticut law bars placing any obstruction within, under, upon or over a state highway "without the written permission of the commissioner" of Transportation (CGS § 13a-247), with fines of $2,000 to $5,000 for each offense and each day counted separately, so a container never goes in the right-of-way of I-84, US-7, US-202, CT-133 or any other state route. Each town page says what that town asks for.

Residential dumpster rental - the Connecticut specifics

Connecticut leaves most of the "what goes where" to towns and facilities, and only a few items are covered by state law that we can point to. Connecticut law says no one may knowingly place a covered electronic device - computers, monitors, laptops and TVs - in a solid waste facility (CGS §§ 22a-636, 22a-629(5)), and a used lead-acid battery may not go in mixed municipal solid waste; it goes back to a retailer, a recycler or a town collection site (§ 22a-256g). Our own list keeps out the rest - paints, solvents and automotive fluids, fuel and fuel containers, hazardous chemicals, propane tanks and pressurized cylinders, fluorescent bulbs, tires, medical waste and asbestos. HRRA's site lists the regional drop-off programs for household hazardous waste, paint and mattresses, and your town's transfer station page says what it takes from residents. On an older house, check the roof and flooring before they come off: Connecticut's Department of Public Health says "All facilities from sheds to commercial establishments are covered" by the state asbestos regulations, and its page notes that federal notice rules apply to renovations above set amounts and to "all demolitions, even when there is no asbestos present". Check the current timing with DPH before work starts. Asbestos never goes in our roll-offs. If you are unsure about an item, call before loading it - the what can and cannot go in guide says where the rest goes.

Residential Dumpster Rental — your questions answered

Not covered here? Call (475) 256-5131 and ask.

Will the dumpster damage my driveway?

Our drivers place each container carefully, and protective boards can go under it on request. If a surface worries you - concrete, asphalt or pavers - ask for boards when you book so it is planned.

Can I put the dumpster on the street instead?

Only where the town allows it, and it is never the first plan. On a Danbury street, § 28-55 requires a City Engineer permit to place anything that obstructs public travel, and § 42-111(2) a Public Works permit for temporary storage of construction materials in the right-of-way; we found no dumpster-specific permit, so we check the City's rules and the placement with you before booking. Outside Danbury we found no town rule for a container on a town road, so we check with Public Works first. On a state highway, CGS § 13a-247 needs written permission from the Commissioner of Transportation. The driveway is always simpler.

Does my HOA have a say?

It may. Association rules can cover containers on your lot, and we do not know your association's rules - let us know about them when you book, along with any tight driveway or limited access, and we plan the delivery around them.

Can I put old appliances or a mattress in the dumpster?

Furniture, mattresses and appliances can go in. Electronics - TVs, computers and monitors - cannot, because Connecticut bars knowingly placing covered electronic devices in a solid waste facility (CGS § 22a-636); our junk removal crew can take them through approved programs.

How long can I keep the container?

A standard rental period of up to 7 days, set on your quote. Need longer? Call or text and we extend it for a small daily fee. Finished early? Call and we move the pickup up, with no penalty for an early pickup.
